Sun has arrived today! 😀 ❤ I could not believe, how it can make people happy when the weather changes. Probably after so many rainy and grey days, it is just a nice change.
When I say green peas mash to many of my friends many of us just remember school cafeteria with a strict teacher around who oversaw that each peas mash would disappear from the plate 😀 It was perhaps the only food they offered to us when we want more. However nowadays, I am not thinking about that experience anymore and it is part of our menu 🙂 And we like it!
What do you need:
350 g green peas
1 kg smoked pork
150 g bacon
2 bigger onion
2 – 3 garlic cloves
1 tsp marjoram
pinch of fennel
pinch of nutmeg
2 pieces bay leaf
hot chilli powder – only if you fancy
Firstly, remember if you are going to do green peas mash, rinsed the peas well and leave it over the night in water. Cooking will be easier and quicker next day. The next day, pour enough of hot water (2 cm above the layer of peas) to the pot with peas, add salt, fennel, nutmeg, bay leaves and bring it to boil. Cook it until is nicely soft, from time to time stir it and keep eye on it so you still have enough water in the pot. In the mean time, finely chop one onion and fry it with butter until golden. When is the peas ready, mash it in the pot (you can still leave some bigger pieces if you like) or blend it in blender. Keep the mash still in the pot, add crushed garlic cloves, marjoram and hot chilli powder if you like. Let simmer everything together for couple of minutes.
While is peas getting ready, you can other two pans. One bigger, where you are going to warm up pieces of smoked pork and the other one, where you can fry finely chopped onion together with bacon.
When is everything ready, serve peas mash with warmed up pieces of smoked pork meat sprinkled with fried onion and pieces of bacon. Doesn’t it taste great? 🙂 I think so!
