I have an amazing husband and I should tell him that more often ❤ He brought home lot of different types of fish, so I decided to prepare something for dinner straight away. What could I find there was mackerel as well. I love this oily fish mainly smoked or grilled. When smoked, we tend to eat it “straight away from paper” with piece of bread and butter. The advantage is, that is so easy to remove bones. Absolutely delicious!!! But – I did not have a smoked one, so I went with steam cooker. At the beginning I thought about baking it in the oven, but everyone was so hungry 😀 Next time! I had as well a bit of mashed potatoes in fridge so I made a use of it, check below 😉
What do you need:
750 g mackerel (4 pieces) – depends on how many people you have around
dry spices – thyme, chilli flakes, mustard seeds and powder, basil, rosemary
pinch of salt
mashed potatoes – leftover
mixed vegetables according to your taste
I have started with potatoes as it was the most time consuming part. Take a big pan, add butter and mashed potatoes (if you have leftovers). If you do not have leftovers, just skip this part. Wash potatoes, you do not need to peel them, just cut them into smaller pieces and add them into the pan. Heat it up and let it cook. When already warmed up, add tea spoon of turmeric and cinnamon and pinch of salt (according to your taste). Let it cook until soft. Do not forget to add a bit of water, so potatoes do not get burnt. However, not much is needed so you can have a nice crust 🙂
Soo… when your potatoes (with mashed potatoes) are getting ready, you can start preparing vegetables and mackerel. I went with steam cooker. I love it. Easy and quick. I have at home prepared mixture of dry spices for fish so I can just take it and spice it. It contains dry thyme, chilli flakes, mustard seeds and powder, basil and rosemary. When is mackerel season, I put it into steam cooker (in first 2 layers of it) and the top layer is filled with mixed vegetables. I picked green peas, broccoli, sweet corn, carrot and green beans. However it is up to you what you like! And you can start “steaming” 🙂 It takes approximately 25 minutes. In the mean time, keep eye on potatoes and add salt if needed.
Once you have everything ready, you can serve! Potatoes have very nice twist with turmeric and cinnamon and with mashed potatoes, they are creamy and crunchy together. So… enjoy!

P.S.: I have almost forgotten! 🙂 I prepared a version for little one as well – mashed potatoes only and steamed mackerel with no seasoning and veggies too! He is still to little for all those amazing tastes.
